Follow Me for THC

Follow Me for THC

In September 2023, my family embarked on a seven-day cruise across the Mediterranean, beginning our journey in Barcelona, Spain. This adventure is chronicled on The Horizon Calls in the Destination Diaries—"Cruising the Mediterranean” series. Touching down in Barcelona, my husband and I found ourselves with a pocket of time to kill before rendezvousing with my folks. Energized, we set out on a quest to revisit some of our favorite haunts from a previous trip to Barcelona in 2016. But this time, we had a specific mission in mind: THC, which we knew was legally accessible in Barcelona under certain conditions.

As we casually walked down the legendary avenue La Rambla, our mission to find the elusive "café" intensified. Suddenly, our path intersected with an intriguing character who would dramatically elevate our Barcelona adventure. With a knowing smile, he invited us to a members-only Reggae/Hip-Hop social club, boasting an atmosphere of laid-back vibes, mouthwatering cuisine, and electrifying live performances, suggested we get memberships, and then told us about other themed gatherings hosted for members. Intrigued by this insider's tip, we couldn't resist delving deeper into the city's vibrant scene.

Did You Know: Cannabis in Barcelona

Recreational cannabis occupies a unique legal status in Spain, where its consumption by adults is deemed legal within ‘private spaces,’ thanks to Catalonia's relatively lenient cannabis laws. However, the federal government in Madrid maintains a more conservative stance on drug policy, rendering THC illegal to possess, purchase, or consume in public settings.

The clubs offering access to cannabis are exclusive member-only establishments, they require an invitation for membership. Tourists or non-residents can obtain invitations through resident members or by directly inquiring about membership online. Due to legal restrictions, these clubs cannot openly solicit memberships or advertise their presence, making them discreet and somewhat elusive to the uninitiated observer.

When you locate the club of choice, ring the buzzer, and go in when granted entry. Register, verify your identity, and pick up your membership card. Annual membership fees range from 20€ - 50€ and donations typically range from 8€ - 15€. Most clubs are cash-only for membership fees and donations.

Contrary to most expectations, these clubs do not operate as conventional dispensaries; rather, they adopt a social club model akin to VIP nightclubs or golf clubs. They primarily provide exclusive access to amenities such as dining, live music, billiards, and beverages. additionally offering a safe legal space to enjoy cannabis. Monetary contributions made by members are considered donations toward the club's upkeep and operational expenses.

Four Essential Rules

Despite the allure of these establishments, there are four essential rules to observe:

  1. Refrain from soliciting cannabis or discussing its purchase,

  2. Adhere to age restrictions (typically 18 or 21 years depending on the club) bring a valid picture ID,

  3. DO NOT remove cannabis from the premises,

  4. DO NOT publicly consume cannabis.

Of these guidelines, the fourth is the most significant. Now that you are aware, you can navigate Barcelona's vibrant social scene with caution and curiosity. I invite you to “Follow Me for THC.”
